We all need to take responsibility for our choices. Once choices are made, we then need to discern what is good and/or bad, and form our own valid opinions to live by, not to force upon others.

SPECTACULAR PAGE!!! I found each section equally fascinating and it has stimulated my thoughts on the topic of music's influence. I believe that music has been and always will be influential. Art is meant to influence its audience. The goal of the artist is to provoke thought, reaction, emotion, and even to be so bold as to try and change the way a person sees the world. It is the repsonsibility of the music industry to inform parents about the content of CDs, however it is the repsonsibility of PARENTS to monitor what their children listen to. Parents should take an interest in their children's lives, so that they may guide the choices their children make. We all must work together to help the children, rather than waste time and energy pointing fingers at who is "guilty."

I sing a song every day, walking down the street, so needless to say music is pretty darn influential to my life. Now, to the question good or bad influence-- I believe it is my own responsibility to answer that question and not to be thrown at my parents, peers, or a record label. Great site! Oooooh yeah.

Music like all art forms requires freedom of expression. Music is one of the windows into the history, traditions and lore of a culture. It is story telling with a melody even when there are no lyrics. All societies must embrace music as an art form and as a pure entertainment. It is the memories of our lives in song. We must protect the rights of artists while at the same time protect our children. Be responsible consumers, make good choices. There will always be risks and dangers out in the world. We must equip our kids with the tools and judgement to handle life. It's scary, but it is so wonderful!

Art imitates life. Not life imitates art. music or any art for that matter can be blamed for our actions. You listen to the type of music based on the type of person you are. BUT GREAT SITE!!! I cannot believe you are only in high school! good luck!

This site is really impressive!!!! The opinion that parents are ultimately responsible for their children is a notion that is often forgotten in today's world. It's just wonderful to realize that teen-age kids are thinking about the music they're listening to and how it affects them! Jody Massey

Dear people, Music can make you do weird things like get high, name yourself "loo", and play the banjo. It also makes you sing random songs like row row the boat and the anonyomous rap. !CLASICAL MUSIC RULES! Signed, The Three musketeers (DH,ML,DB)

Artists must be responsible and consider the effect they have on young impressionable minds. What about the kids whose parents aren't around aren't teaching them good judgement?Look around you, kids are seriously heading in the wrong direction and music is partly to blame!

It is nearly impossible to deny that music, like so many things, has an effect on the human psyche and consequent behaviors. A simpmle example that illustrates music's ability to, in some ways, delude the listener, is a military cadence. It could also be called escapism and transcendence, but the point is that a group of soldiers on a ten mile march will have an easier time of marching if they sing along to a simple song that motivates them to complete an immediately pointless activity by ignoring the physical pain. The tempo keeps their feet moving, the words keeps their mind off their feet. Music is absolutely a powerful tool. It can invoke patriotic sentiment (national anthems) or even try to incite violent activity. In both cases, there is an intermediate step that determines whether the music succeeds in its goals. A sense of individual responsibility and self-control tempers the final outcome when someone listens to Marilyn Manson or Britney Spears. I have personally listened to Marilyn Manson for several years now, and despite his sometimes revolting appearance and his melancholic/angry/depressed/reflective music, I have yet to open fire on innocent people with assault weapons. I can't recall lyrics that tell me to do so, at any rate, but even if they were in the music, I would not obey. I have listened to songs that were nothing more than the repeated slogan "Kill all the white people," but I have not done that (and I am not white). I have heard songs that told me to smoke pot, and after some consideration, I did. The point is that I am able to discern what is a reasonable proposition. If a listener is going to mindlessly follow the directions he receives through music, he will find himself torn in countless directions (as well as listening to horribly unpoetic and transparent music). I listen to and enjoy darker music because I find it more honest and easier to relate to. Despite the disquieting yearning and depressing undertones, I do not feel that I should kill myself. If I were, however to listen to bubble gum pop music, I would probably be more inclined to do so... Parents need to be teaching their kids some sense of responsibility instead of pointing fingers at the proxy electronic units they've bought with the unfair expectation that mass media will conform to their own standards of morality.
